The HG fandom is still buzzing after the “Catching Fire” trailer was released at Comic-Con in San Diego. So many crucial, fan-favorite scenes were revealed: the mockingjay dress, the Arena. But, personally, I think the best moments were the glimpses we finally got of all the new characters: Gloss, Enobaria, Finnick, Johanna. Well, MTV News had a little chat with one of the Hunger Games newbies, Jeffrey Wright, at Comic-Con to find out more about his experience shooting “Catching Fire” and why he was attracted to the role of “Volts” (aka Beetee).
Says the “The Ides of March” actor on joining the franchise: “[I] read the books — not before being invited to be a part of it — but I read the books, and I realized that, yes, this is a huge movie and big-budget and a lot of action and sci-fi elements and all that, but at the same time the messaging within these books and within the movies is really interesting and really relevant, particularly for younger audiences. Issues around war and the consequences of war and the consequences of war on warriors and people — the human elements of that I don’t think we can address enough. And if we can do it in a way that’s as thrilling as these movies are, more power to us.”
In the movie, Wright stars as Beetee, a District 3 Tribute who happens to be a techie and very handy when it comes to all things electric, particularly in the Arena. One of Wright’s favorite things about playing the role was taking in the movie backdrop: the beautiful Hawaii islands.
“I chewed on everything we shot in Hawaii, and I continue to savor,” he said. “I’m closer now [in San Diego] than I am in Brooklyn. Shooting there obviously lent a lot to what we were trying to achieve, but also Hawaii is such a magical place for so many reasons: culturally, geologically, environmentally. I mean, I just fell in love with that place. Unfortunately, no more reshoots to be done there.”
Seems like Jeffrey Wright makes a great addition to an already-awesome cast! He’s definitely got a firm handle on and respect for the important themes in the “Hunger Games” trilogy. I can’t wait to see what he does with his character and whether he’ll continue into the Mockingjay films!
What are YOU hoping Jeffrey Wright brings to his role as Beetee? Any particular scenes you’re looking forward to seeing?
